The December camp out scheduled for the 27th – 29th is being canceled. Being so close to the Holidays, it seems that there are many family plans and holiday fun to have. Thank you all for the hard work and participation during the 2016 year and we look forward to a fun and active 2017.
As a reminder, sign ups for fall fellowship are ongoing and already in late phase. If you have not already signed up and you plan on going, you should do it now before the registration is cut off on the 9th.
Hello everyone, I’m John and once again I Am writing the report/overview of last month’s camp-out. There is so much to cover I’m not sure how to start other than to jump right into it.
After eight hours of driving we finally made it to the ferrie that would take us to South Bass Island (an island in the middle of lake Erie). When you looked at lake Erie you would think it was the ocean unless someone told you that it’s a lake. The ferrie ride was fun. We were able to see our hair blow in the wind as we sailed across the lake. After about twenty minuets we finally made it to the island.
By the time we got there it was dark at our campsite and we were being swarmed by bugs. During the course of our stay I’m sure we all swallowed a few bugs. Anyway we had a pretty good dinner if you don’t count the bugs.
The next day was more eventful, we got up had breakfast and got read for the day. After that we hung out and got ready to go to the beach.
At the beach/lake we had a pretty good time, we swam did some frisbee, and all that other beach stuff. After we got out we began this camp-out’s D&D campaign in which Neil created an over powered character that beat the main villain with one move.
Anyway after that we took a tour of the town. There were golf carts everywhere, there were even golf cart dealerships. The best thing though was Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. It’s a giant granite pillar on South Bass that commemorates The Battle of Lake Erie and the peace between the U.S. and England after the War of 1812.
When we to the elevator up it to a whole minute to get up to the top it’s 352 feet tall, you could see the whole island and the very edge of the Canadian border from up there.
The rest of the town was cool and we even got a picture of Sam sticking his head in a FAKE cannon.
We lounged around the rest of the day and had to deal with more bugs but, thankfully not during dinner, and Josh also swallowed a few while he was DMing D&D.
The next morning we had omelets and packed up camp. After we did our trash sweep we set off for Kirtland.
The first thing we did when we got there was to tour the original town of Kirtland. We saw the house where Joseph Smith lived when he was there and the first “MTC” in the attic of that house. We also saw the sawmill where they cut the wood to make the Kirtland temple.
After we finished we breaked for lunch in the picnic area and then went off to see the temple.
The temple was so amazing, the way everything was set up and the fact that we were in one of the few places that we know Jesus stood and walked.
After we finished our tour of the temple we got back in the cars and headed for our next campsite. During that time we also stopped for dinner at Taco Bell. Anyway once we got to the campsite we set up camp and hit the sack.
When we got back to the church there was steam coming of the side walks because the side-walk had been so hot during the day that when it started raining the water evaporated when it hit the side walk. Once we where all there we unpacked everything and then, slowly, one by one we all when home.
Before I end this I would like to thank John Oliver and Gain Foster for driving us all that way.
As many of you are already aware, the Norfolk trip has been postponed due to changes in their security policy since our last visit. Because of this, we are taking the opportunity to have a Movie / Game afternoon on Saturday.
Location: Church
Time: 1pm to 7pm
Date: 8/13/16
Dinner/Snack Cost: $5 (Cash Please)
We will have some snacks there, but if you have any you want to bring, you are welcome too. Game’s must be pre-approved, so please contact me if you plan on bringing any. If you plan on bringing any game consoles or computers, please let me know so I know what we have.
We know this is all last minute and we apologize for that. We tried everything we could to make the Norfolk trip work for this date. Because we weren’t, we still wanted to make a fun day of it.
One benefit of it not being an overnighter means that any of our eleven year old scouts that want to attend are more than welcome to come! It should be a fun time!
For this campout we will be driving to South Bass Island State Park in Ohio (it is an island on lake Erie) for the first day and setting up tents. On Tuesday we will be hanging out at the beach near our camsite. Wednesday we will pack up and head out to the Kirtland Temple and go check out the locations around there. Afterwords, we will go to our final campsite in Bloomingdale that we will spend the night at before heading home.

I am proud to announce that 3 of our newly elected Order of the Arrow candidates were able to complete their Ordeal and induction this past weekend. A huge congratulation to Dallin, Beckette and Andrew on this accomplishment! Next step, Brotherhood.
Also a shout out to Charlie who not only attended, but also served as an Elangomat for the weekend! Also a big thanks to Mike for coming out and supporting our new Arrowmen.
We hope to see ALL the Arrowmen at the next OA event in October for the Fall Fellowship. Again, as always, if anyone has any questions about the OA, it’s meaning or purpose, please feel free to reach out or look at some of the related articles below.
On Thursday, May 26, 2016, two of our own scout leaders were recognized for their outstanding service to our youth. Joseph Taylor, for our Pack, and Mike Bradshaw, for our Troop, were awarded the Unit Recognition Award.
Our Cardinal District provided a dinner and Unit Recognition Awards were given to volunteer leaders. There was a good turnout, and wonderful fellowship.
We have a fantastic “camping trip” coming up in a few weeks where we get to stay overnight at one of the best climbing gyms in the tri-city area, Peak Experiences.
This means that the moment the gym closes, our troop, with a few other troops that have been invited (and maybe a few other random people) will have the opportunity to take over and enjoy a night of climbing.
Registration needs to happen somewhat quickly for this one, so I will stop boring you and give you all the details.
Where:Â Peak Experiences
Address:Â 11421 Polo Circle, Midlothian VA 23113
Date: June 17th to the 18th
Time: 8pm (Fri) to 7am (Sat)
Cost: $35 (Cash – Includes Registration/Gear and a late Dinner)
Rides: If you need help getting your youth to the location, please contact a troop leader. Otherwise, plan on meeting us down there.
As always, fathers are more than welcome to attend! If you enjoy the sport of climbing, please feel free to join us. We doubt you will get much sleep that night, but you may want to bring a sleeping bag and pillow just in case. You might also want to bring some snacks. Climbing is a lot of work and sometimes snacks is all it takes to get you back on the wall.
Make sure you have shoes that are acceptable for this kind of activity. Running shoes/tennis shoes will work, crocs/boots will not (talking to you Gain).
You need to sign up! All participants (including adults) MUST sign up using the form found by clicking HEREÂ or by clicking the button at the top of the page. The deadline for signing up is the 10th of June (please don’t wait that long). If you want to sign up after this point, please contact myself.
For more information about what a lock-in is, please see their page about it by clicking here.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Yours in Brotherhood, Scouting and the Gospel, John Oliver
I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone that was able to make it to the game last night and help with the flag ceremony. Lot’s of fun was had and it was a great game until the last inning.
Mike did a fantastic job during the 7th that had the crowd singing along with him.
We look forward to next year and seeing everyone there.
I wanted to share this video from our court of honor and call out last night and congratulate everyone who earned merit badges at spring camp. While there are too many to name here (see the video), everyone did a fantastic job and our scouts were able to finish 19 merit badges with partials that will be wrapped up soon.
I also wanted to congratulate John and Andrew on their rank advancement! They have put in a lot of hard work and earned it!
Last, but most certainly not least, I wanted to congratulate Beckette, Andrew and Dallin on becoming the newest candidates of the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America. Having met the requirements and being voted in by their fellow troop members, they will have the opportunity to go through their Ordeal in June.
Congratulations once again to everyone and their accomplishments!
PS: Huge thanks to the Pamunkey Chapter 7 ceremonies team for coming and doing our call out!
